The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) is a key economic indicator in India that measures growth in industrial sectors. Compiled monthly by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), the index was recently updated on June 1, 2026, with a new base year of 2022-23, replacing the previous 2011-12 base. It tracks sectors like manufacturing, mining, and electricity to assess the health of the industrial economy.

In 2026, conflicts in West Asia (including Red Sea shipping disruptions and regional hostilities) have created economic headwinds for India. Since India imports over 50% of its crude oil from the region, these tensions raise freight and insurance costs, disrupt maritime routes (like the Bab al-Mandab), and lead to oil price volatility, exerting pressure on India’s inflation and trade balance.

The base effect refers to the impact of an abnormally low or high data point in a previous year (the base period) on the calculation of percentage growth in the current year. For example, if industrial output was extremely low in June 2025 due to a slowdown, even a modest recovery in June 2026 will appear as a large percentage growth rate, potentially overstating the actual strength of the recovery.

The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) classifies industrial products into six use-based categories: Primary Goods (mining, electricity), Capital Goods (machinery, equipment), Intermediate Goods (yarn, steel), Infrastructure/Construction Goods (cement, bricks), Consumer Durables (long-lasting goods like electronics and cars), and Consumer Non-durables (daily-use items like food, medicine, and toiletries). This classification helps economists understand which sectors are driving growth.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry releases monthly data on India’s foreign trade, including merchandise (goods) and services exports. Merchandise exports cover physical products like engineering goods, petroleum products, chemicals, and textiles. A growth in merchandise exports indicates strong demand for Indian goods in international markets, boosting the manufacturing sector.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of India has heavily relied on capital expenditure (spending on infrastructure like roads, railways, and ports) as the primary driver of economic growth. This is because private sector investment was weak, and government-led capital creation has a high “multiplier effect,” meaning it creates jobs and stimulates demand in other sectors like steel and cement.

In economics, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is driven by four main engines: Private Final Consumption Expenditure (household spending/domestic consumption), Government Final Consumption Expenditure (government spending), Gross Fixed Capital Formation (investments/capital creation), and Net Exports (exports minus imports). When domestic consumption and exports are weak, the economy relies solely on government investment to grow.

In India, the electricity sector of the IIP is heavily influenced by seasonal temperature fluctuations. During summer months (such as June), severe heatwaves across northern and central parts of India lead to a massive spike in power consumption due to the continuous use of air conditioners and cooling systems. This surge causes a temporary spike in the IIP data, which does not represent a structural increase in industrial activity.

In India, the southwest monsoon (which runs from June to September) heavily disrupts open-cast mining activities. Flooding of mines, slippery transport routes, and safety hazards often lead to a sharp decline in coal and mineral extraction during these months. As a result, any growth registered by the mining sector in June is typically short-lived and reverses as the monsoon peaks in July and August.

Agriculture employs nearly half of India’s workforce and is heavily dependent on the southwest monsoon for irrigation. A deficient monsoon reduces crop yields and agricultural incomes, which directly lowers the purchasing power of the rural population. Since rural consumers buy a major share of India’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), tractors, and consumer durables, poor rainfall inevitably leads to a slowdown in these consumer-facing industrial sectors.

Fiscal deficit is the difference between the government’s total expenditure and its total non-debt receipts (primarily taxes). When the government pumps money into capital expenditure, it increases public spending, which can widen the fiscal deficit. At the same time, the government faces fiscal pressures from welfare schemes, interest payments on past debt, and subsidies (like food and fertilizer). Balancing high infrastructure spending with fiscal discipline is a key challenge for India’s Ministry of Finance.
