In the July 2024 UK general election, the Labour Party won a massive majority in Parliament, taking 412 out of 650 seats. However, they achieved this landslide with only 33.7% of the popular vote. This disparity is a characteristic of the UK’s first-past-the-post electoral system, where candidates only need a plurality of votes in individual constituencies to win a seat.

The Conservative Party was in power in the UK for 14 years before their defeat in 2024. Public discontent grew due to economic instability, notably during Liz Truss’s short-lived premiership in late 2022, when a controversial mini-budget proposal caused market panic and a sharp decline in the pound. Her successor Rishi Sunak stabilized the economy but struggled to overcome public disenchantment before the election.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration was derailed by three key issues: first, a public backlash over senior officials accepting expensive gifts from donors; second, a controversial policy to cut welfare spending (such as winter fuel payments for pensioners); and third, the scandal surrounding his appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the US, which was aborted after files exposed Mandelson’s past ties with convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein. These controversies led to Starmer’s ousting by his own party in 2026.

Brexit refers to the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union (EU) on January 31, 2020, following a public referendum in June 2016. The political and economic adjustments after Brexit—including new trade barriers, labor shortages, and debates over immigration—have contributed significantly to the instability of successive British governments.

In their 2024 election manifesto, the UK Labour Party pledged not to increase key taxes—specifically income tax, national insurance, and value-added tax (VAT). While this promise appealed to voters, it left the government with very little flexibility to increase tax revenue, forcing them to look for spending cuts in other areas, such as welfare, to manage the national deficit.

The UK is caught between supporting European allies in aiding Ukraine against Russia, and maintaining its “special relationship” with the US under the Donald Trump administration (who took office in January 2025). The Trump administration has historically been skeptical of foreign aid to Ukraine and NATO spending, creating diplomatic pressure for British leaders.

Net migration to the UK peaked at historic levels in 2022 and 2023 before beginning to decline in 2024 and 2025 following visa restrictions on students and care workers. Despite the decline, public anxiety and political pressure from right-wing factions remain high, demanding stricter controls, which conflicts with progressive factions in the Labour Party that favor economic pragmatism and compromise.
