Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is one of India’s most decorated weightlifters, having won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and gold at the World Weightlifting Championships. Her gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in the 48kg category marked her third consecutive gold medal (following gold in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022), and her fourth successive CWG medal overall, having won silver at Glasgow 2014. Her consistent excellence has kept Indian weightlifting on the global map.

In November 2025, the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly confirmed Ahmedabad, Gujarat, as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. This centenary edition marks 100 years since the first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. India is upgrading its sports infrastructure at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, with the Narendra Modi Stadium set to host the opening and closing ceremonies. The event is seen as a major preparation step for India’s potential bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow were heavily scaled down to ensure financial viability after Victoria, Australia withdrew due to rising costs. With only a short preparation window and a budget cap, organizers reduced the number of sports from 19 (in Birmingham 2022) to just 10. Heavy medal-yielding sports for India, such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey, and squash, were completely dropped, which significantly reduced India’s projected medal tally from its previous high of 61 medals in 2022.

The sentence highlights India’s top athletes expected to perform well at Glasgow 2026: Neeraj Chopra (Olympic and World Champion in men’s javelin throw), Murali Sreeshankar (Commonwealth Games silver medalist in men’s long jump), Praveen Chithravel (triple jumper), Lovlina Borgohain (Olympic bronze medalist and World Champion in women’s boxing), and Jaismine Lamboria (Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in women’s boxing). These athletes represent India’s core strengths in athletics and boxing.

The Commonwealth Games, originally called the ‘British Empire Games’ when they began in 1930, were created to foster unity and athletic competition among the colonies of the British Empire. Today, the Commonwealth of Nations is a political association of 56 member states, mostly former territories of the empire. As these countries assert their independent identities and the economic costs of hosting rise, the relevance of this empire-linked sporting tradition has increasingly come under question globally.

In July 2023, the government of Victoria, Australia, canceled its plans to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The state Premier announced that the estimated cost of hosting had tripled from the initial projection of 2.6 billion Australian dollars to nearly 7 billion Australian dollars. The sudden withdrawal left the Commonwealth Games Federation with no host, creating an existential crisis for the future of the multi-sport event until Glasgow stepped in to host a scaled-down version.

To avoid massive expenditures, Glasgow 2026 designed a highly compact model. The Games will use four existing venues within an 8-mile corridor: the Commonwealth Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, Tollcross Swimming Centre, Scotstoun Stadium, and the Scottish Event Campus (SEC). It features only 10 sports compared to 19 in 2022, with para-sports fully integrated into the main sports program to save costs on separate setups, demonstrating a sustainable template for future hosts.

For Indian athletes, multi-sport tournaments have different levels of prestige. The Olympics represent the pinnacle of global sporting excellence where competition is fiercest. The Asian Games feature elite regional competition, particularly from powerhouse nations like China, Japan, and South Korea. While the Commonwealth Games lack these global and regional giants, they still offer a highly visible international platform. Winning medals here boosts athletes’ funding, sponsorships, and national recognition, making it highly appealing to both competitors and sports administrators in India.

According to annual reports by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), India has consistently recorded some of the highest numbers of anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs) globally, topping the doping charts for three consecutive years (2022–2024). The high number of positive tests spans multiple sports, especially weightlifting, athletics, and wrestling. This systemic issue undermines India’s efforts to project itself as a global sporting powerhouse and clean sports advocate.

In the weeks leading up to Glasgow 2026, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) provisionally suspended multiple Indian athletes, including judokas Arun Kumar (for anabolic steroids) and Tulika Maan (for three whereabouts failures). Furthermore, due to five positive doping cases recorded in weightlifting between June 2025 and July 2026, India’s athlete quota in weightlifting was reduced from 16 to 11 under qualification rules, forcing the federation to withdraw weightlifter Dilbagh Singh just before the Games.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi were marred by massive corruption scandals involving sports administrators and government officials. Investigations by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) and the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) revealed severe financial irregularities, inflated contracts, and construction delays, leading to the arrest of the Organizing Committee chief, Suresh Kalmadi, and others on charges of cheating and conspiracy. The scandal caused significant damage to India’s international image and remains a cautionary tale for major sporting events in India.
